The beginning of a New Year brings a sense of renewal and motivation to change.

It follows a period often marked by over indulgence with food, drinks, late nights and a non-stop schedule which leaves us feeling lethargic, heavier, bloated and sluggish.

And so… we all look forward to the 31st of December as a symbol of closure with the old ways and the beginning of a new and better phase of our life.

Typically we mark this passage making a New Year Resolution …I have done this for decades and the story used to go like this…

I will workout everyday
I will stop eating chocolate and bread and pasta and…
I will join a local charity group
I will reorganise my home
I will apply for that promotion

and many more

To start with, the initial motivation and determination would carry me through January… I dieted, I gymmed, I volunteered, I organised and I worked hard ..I felt great and proud of the new invincible version of me…

Then, inevitably, life happened…one of my kids was off school sick, my workload picked up, I received bad news about a friend’s health, I fought with my husband, I got overworked and exhausted and… guess what ?

My new year resolutions started to be another thing to do …something else to add on to my already unrealistic list… so gym sessions started to be fewer and fewer, my comfort food would creep in again, that relaxing drink in the evening would start having an invincible appeal again, volunteering had to be missed …

My old habits crept back in and I felt guilty and disappointed ! What was supposed to be a positive change in my life actually made me feel like I failed and as a result I would give it all up !

And this scene was repeating itself each January for many, many years …
Does it sound familiar?
The good news is that, although it took me more than 30 years to get there …I finally took my last year resolution 4 years ago and this was the first successful one ever!

It went like this: “My New Year Resolution is to ditch the resolution forever!”

Instead I decided to adopt a simple ritual to mark the passage of the old year into the new year to make positive changes in my life in a different way.

Each year now I make some time on the 31st December to sit down and go through this New Year Ritual which is simple yet very powerful and allows me so set my intentions for 2017 in an accepting, positive and uplifting way …more like planning a journey through my year ahead than just making more strict and unrealistic rules for myself.

I have used this template with some friends and clients in the past and they all found the exercise uplifting, soothing and motivating so I have decided to share it with you all.
